Clue to Riddle #70: Three Runners Each Beat the Other by 20m

70. Andrew, Britney and Carol race each other in a 100 meters race. All of them run at a constant speed throughout the race.

Andrew beats Britney by 20 meters.
Britney beats Carol by 20 meters.

By how many meters does Andrew beat Carol?
A woman running in silhouette It's obviously tempting, or rather the question is designed to tempt you in to answering 40m. It's not that simple. The 20m between Andrew and Britney is at the time when Andrew crosses the line. The 20m between Britney and Carol is at the point Britney crosses the line. the gaps will be growing.

We really need to work out the distance Carol has travelled at the point when Andrew crosses the line.

Where next?
